Romeo

On a recent trip to the Galapagos, I met Romeo, the giant tortoise, wandering on a farm. Romeo had a lot of charm and put on quite a show for the lady tortoises in the vicinity. Romeo was happy to pose for me. After many photos I was able to capture his expression. I have tilted his colouring a bit towards purples to try and capture the warmth of his personality.

The piece is 11x14 on Stonehenge paper using Caran D'ache Luminanace and Faber Castell Polychromos. I used some Gamsol in the early stages for blending colours into the paper.

I am a Canadian artist and have been working with colour pencils since the winter of 2018. I started by working on many different subjects but quickly realized I enjoy working on animal and bird portraits. I choose animals I have encountered personally and have a memory or emotion that I can attach to them. Attempting to transfer those feelings to the portrait is where the fun and challenge lies.
